About Mavi Contemporary Art
Mavi Contemporary Art showcases fine art – painting, sculpture, glass, photography, original prints, jewelry and ceramics. With the remodel, the front vault is available for installations pieces as well. There are three exhibition areas. Sculpture and painting are the primary focus at Mavi Contemporary Art, a gallery already considered a “must see” in Tacoma. Mavi and Elizabeth plan to support the work of local artists in addition to bring in artists from around the world.
Owner and Director of the gallery. Elizabeth has a devoted background in art. She received a B.A. from Cornell College, a B.F.A. in Sculpture from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and an M.F.A. in Creative Writing from Chatham University. She an M.F.A. at Maryland Institute College of Art. Her art has been exhibited in Baltimore, Pittsburgh, New York, Chicago, Minnesota, Washington and Iowa. A poem was selected by 4Culture’s Poetry on Seattle Buses project in 2007, and many more are published. Elizabeth’s art combines poetry and sculpture, which invoke space considerations, ritual and the oral tradition. Her range includes land art, installation, cast metals and painting.
Namesake and Business Manager of the gallery. Mavi is a life-long artist and strong supporter of the arts. She has decades of small business successes in her repertoire. A figurative abstract oil painter, her work has recently been exhibited in the Tacoma area and France. She has a budding interest in performance art. Mavi previously lived in the south of France, where she was influenced afresh by the eternal works of Picasso, Matisse, Miro and Chagall. Upon her return to Washington, Mavi studied art briefly at UW – Tacoma, when her love for this city took off. Mavi has donated paintings to several local charity auctions.
Susan Massey moved to Tacoma to study art after receiving a degree in Marketing from the University of California, Long Beach. In 2005 Massey received a Certificate in Drawing from Gage Academy of Fine Art in Seattle and continued her studies from 2006-07 in the Drawing & Painting Atelier at Gage. My focus is primarily works on paper in graphite and carbon dust. In addition to working at Mavi Contemporary Art, she also works at the Museum of Glass. She teaches drawing and exhibits throughout the Pacific Northwest.
